Weird & Sad

The Airbus A330-200, carrying 228 passengers and crew members, is believed to have vanished in a towering thunderstorm with no word from its pilots that they were in crisis. Read more at...

And he is 4...

Benji had a birthday a few weeks ago – we were still in Brasil – no one really were in the mood for a party, dad was in the hospital (b4 surgery) so we had a cake and just a couple friends over. He didn’t notice everyone had their minds somewhere else – which is good – and had a great time.

Benji was not allowed in Vovo Celso’s room at the hospital but since it was his birthday they got my dad on a wheel chair out to the hallway and they had a nice visit. Benji was sad to see vovo on his IV and being praying constantly that he feels better soon!

In Brasil is not easy to find donuts and when we do (Wal-Mart has them) they are awful! So I made homemade donuts for Benji – usually I just make little donut balls and they are yummie and cute – this time – since it was his birthday I tried making the traditional shaped donuts and it didn’t look very nice but it tasted very awesome! =)

In Cincinnati we had a cake before we left back in November – since Julio was moving to Panama, so these will be it for his 4th birthday celebration. The worst ever I ever done for him, the cheapest and still the one I think he enjoyed the most – go figure!
Cincinnati Birthday Party - Back in November (Not that you can really call it a party - we just had a cake a night during the week...)

The Gs at Caiobá beach

We went to the beach this weekend and overall it was great! The boys absolutely loved – Benji had a blast, Noah was not so sure at first but of course after all he wasn’t happy to leave. We were so lucky to get the greatest weather (maybe even a little too much sun for Dan & I). I can say everything was perfect and the boys will sure have the best memories of their first time at the beach.
The waves were a little too strong in my opinion – I felt down twice and busted out the biggest laugh ever!!! The ocean is awesome – the most amazing place ever! But to be honest I’m happier at the pool (at least when it comes to going with my kids) – The biggest sand box in the world it’s NOT a happy place for me (again – at least not with small kids) I can’t understand today how my parents ever did with me and my sister, little - for the whole summer or weeks at the time at the beach.
Salt – Sand – Sun isn’t a good combination to me at this time of my life.
I’m SUCH a pool person! LOL (Funny how things can change easily) And I sure was a bitch at the beach (not to my family – but to everyone else who helped to make my life harder)
Well-I must get it out of my chest – that people that doesn’t have kids should never make plans for people that does. Also – if someone wants to do something nice for you – first this person should make sure you want that! Don’t tell someone to “make yourself home” when you are imposing 600 rules and you want people to do things your way – at your time! Grrrr!
Phewwww! I sure feel much better….
But going back to talking about the good parts of it – I must say Benji made the coolest friend; Luigi, and his mom was very cool too. Also - as usual Kadu, Guga &Claudia were so helpful with the kids. Kadu I must say it’s a pretty cool friend. =)
I’m sure Caco got the coolest pics but these are the only ones I have on my camera to share right now:

* Dan & I

* Noah bird

* Noah bird again - always with his sunglasses

* Benji & my dad having all kinds of fun

* Caiobá

more pics...

... I never got to post the other day...

Fiona- my sister's dog came back home - or better - the mail man found her about 15 blocks away from home and made sure she came back! The kids were so happy!
I took her to the Vet - a place where I used to work when going to vet school, made sure she was "flee free" and other parisites as well... and got to see old school friends and Dr. J who was the coolest Vet ever and was always teaching me alot!

Noah bird singing - better: worshiping.

Beautiful Brasil - These two cute birds were hanging by some sort of a string (maybe a kite string or some sort of web that hanged the twig - they set there for hours - right here in front of my mom's house...

Araucaria Pine Tree - typical from Paraná - state where my parents live now - one of the symbols of the south of Brasil.

ESFIHAAAAAAA!! Yummmie! The kids helped prepare it! =)

A day at the farm...

Today we went to my mom's family farm. It was awesome!
Benji & Noah had so much fun! (Noah too... but he did stay more around the house)
as Benji wanted to see everything... the chickens - the eggs - how to make cheese, the milk coming from the cow...
He absolutelly impressed me, cause he is so sensitive when it comes to what he sees - he'll barf for no reason, but this time he got he fish, watch my cousin kill and clean the fish, tried diferent food, ran thru the woods and corn fields, help a peep and a bunch of other funs things.
I believe he learned more in a day than he would in weeks of reading books or anyone else could teach.
Every Sunday morning there is a street fair in my parent's city. Seven , maybe eight blocks of downtown is full of arts and crafts. All kids of things you can imagine - or not - like household, food, craft, clothing, shoes... you name it!

My mom kept the kids and I went there with my sister and my aunt. Up and down those hills. If I had money - it woud be all gone! =oP

* A street full of nice places to eat, learn or just see "art"

* I loved this idea for shelves...

* A little piece of the street fair

* and I came home to some happy and well fed kids! =)

Happy 2009!!!!

We had a nice party, it could only be better if Dan could be with us! Here in Brasil New Years is always a big party, everyone has fireworks - it's beautiful! We got just a few part of our family together (about 28 of us), less then usual but still we had a great time! I saw cousins that I haven't seing in 6 or 7 years! It was only my mom's side of the family, but still not all her siblings were there. The menu was awesome, we had so much food and deserts. We all had a blast!

* My mom cooked one of my favorite dishes: Past with pumpkin puree and almods! Yummm!

* Trying to get everyone in the picture!

* My dad & I - I love this man!

Public Health Care in Curitiba

Let me tell you my experience here with public health care. Actually first let me tell ya that Benji’s visit to private hospital coasted me about 600 bucks (supposedly my insurance will reimburse us). And during this visit the Dr. touched Benji maybe once or twice.

From the beginning – Noah had a hard night, woke up with a little fever and holding his right ear. This kid has NEVER had an ear infection. It’s being 2 days also he had complained about a belly ache, (however his BMs were ok, Dan had just left and they are VERY close so I never worried). Well – I thought it would be a good idea to take him to the Dr. Just in case!
My mom suggested me to take him to our local office, here in the neighborhood just a few blocks away from her house, “Posto de Saude” – Health Spot, Health Site… something on those lines… because they were good and free so I didn’t have to worry about $ and or filing with my insurance again.
At first I was so not ok with it – I was thinking a bunch of sick people and lines, hours of waiting for crap service but I just wanted to get an opinion on what was going on with him. I usually do my own thing – so then I went and for my surprise, this is what we experienced:
No line, very happy people in a VERY clean environment. There were 2 patients in front of me and they saw Noah within 15 minutes. First the nurses came to measure and get his info – than a Dr. who talked with him in English the whole time. She spent at least 30 minutes with us. Held him, calmed him down – did all the necessary exams to figure it out what he had + more…
Wrote me a prescription for 4 medications – one for his ear (he has a cyst), antibiotics, pain/fever medication if it was necessary + pedialite in case the antibiotic had an effect on his BMs causing him to become dehydrated. All of those were provided at the office with NO cost. I can go back when the meds are over for a checkup or any other time I desire to check on him!

I was SO impressed and satisfied! So much that I want to do something for that Unit. Not sure what yet but I’m sure to think of something.
Just as a curiosity – there they also provide free vaccination, breast milk donated from mothers that are tested at that facility for other babies whom may need, a pharmacy and health classes. What a great service for a 3rd world country!!! =D

Noah never took the pain/fever meds. He is however taking the antibiotcs. Keep him in your prayers - Also my dad; he has a lot of pain, a little reaction from chemo and maybe according to the Drs. may be fighting a flu like virus... Pray that he can get it over and that if it's a virus none of us get it!

We made it!!! =D

We made it!!! =D

And we were up to a rough start! Man…. quite a few times I didn’t think it was gonna end!

Our flight was not bad at all… a 2 hour drive to Columbus, Elan was with us – we all had lunch together and there we got a plane to NY; about 1.5 hours – not bad. A layover of 3 or so hours – not so bad either…
The kids did great in the plane, never bothered by the lack of TV or toys! Everything was great until close to landing Noah barfed!
That was a start… he did it again once or twice! No big deal. We were very worried because in our plane there was another 3 or 4 adults sick. The flight attendants were wondering if it was the food – but Noah never had anything at the plane, we fed him dinner at the airport and he slept most of the time.

Next day, already in Sao Paulo at my aunt’s house Benji feels sick… Barfing all over the place – probably like 20 times that afternoon. We got a Dr.`s name from Si and got him cared for – by that time he had strong diarrhea too.
Long story short Benjamin was at the Hospital overnight on IV and medication.

Thank God he is much better now, we were even able to attend the wedding that it was one of the main reasons we came here for!
It was just so hard to see him going thru all that. And he was such a brave little man! Never cried to get the IV in and out… took all his medicines with no problem! Very strong. He broke my heart many times saying things like “Mama, I throw up again – I knew I could not have eaten those crackers” - or – “I’m never eating and drinking again”
WOW – How awful it was! But it’s DONE! “sort of “ the Dr. said this was a virus that takes 3 to 7 days to incubate, and we all suspect that is was the same bug Elan had (he felt just like that after Thanksgiving) – soooo, guess what? My grandma has it now – and I’m so sad for her – she is suffering! We do pray that she feels better soon and that NO ONE gets it. We sure did have enough.
Because of all this our adaptation time has totally doubled or tripled. We are now going to Curitiba ASAP and our planes have changed.

It’s all good, we hope for the best but sure I’m trying to be ready for it all!

I’m wondering if we are any close to have fun on this vacation. My dad is not doing as well as I hoped for and the level of stress is high – for everyone! Dan & I – My parents and extended family. This is sad but I’m ready to go back home. I hope to write again soon – with much better news!
Please keep us in your prayers!!! We sure can use many! -LOL

** Much love!* *
Lica

I want to gooooo!!!!

So Ben draws a bunch of lines all around this big piece of paper while I was cooking dinner, he came closer and said:

“Mom, this one is the way to Isaac’s house, this is the way to Julio’s house and this is the way to Monica’s house. What else should I draw in my map?”

And I said “Can you do the way to vovoh’s house?”

More then fast he answered: “Then I’ll need to draw a plane mom…”

*Cute!!!
